Many people in Wonersh, Blackheath and Shamley Green
get involved in local events, clubs, societies and community
projects. It is a great way to help improve life in
our villages, meet new people and get the satisfaction
of making a difference. It’s easy not to get involved,
but it is more fun and rewarding if you do.
Have you considered becoming
a Parish Councillor?
Parish Councillors have an opportunity to make a real
difference to their community, at a small cost in time
and effort. Have you considered becoming a Parish Councillor?
It may be easier and more rewarding than you think.
But what is involved? Here is some background information
you might find interesting.

Help to reduce the carbon footprint
in our parish
Wonersh Parish Council would like to ask residents
to think about climate change and sustainability and
about the ways we can all make a small difference in
our local area. We should be pleased if you would support
our first initiative which is to encourage residents
to use low energy light bulbs:
On: Saturdays July 12th, 19th, 26th,2nd August
Where: Unit next to Wonersh Village Stores
When: 10.30am-1.30pm
Come and see the large display of low energy light
bulbs now available There will be people on hand to
discuss your particular domestic or business lighting
requirements and we are happy to lend you an energy
monitor so you can measure your electricity consumption.
You will also be able to buy light bulbs at a substantial
discount compared to retail prices. You may be surprised
at the diversity of bulbs now available and at the saving
that can be made. Replacing all the remaining traditional
inefficient light bulbs in your house could save you
around £45 and 170kg CO2 a year, or £600
and 3 tonnes of CO2 over the lifetime of
the bulbs.
We shall also be offering a service whereby you will
be able to make an appointment for a visit to your home
to advise you on your requirements. You can do this
either by coming in to see us on a Saturday, by phoning
the Parish Office on 01483 892601 or
e-mailing clerk@wonershparish.org
and we will get back to you.
If this project is successful, we hope to be able to
work with residents in other ways to address these important
issues.
LORD (Lorries Off Rural Detours)
LORD is a non-political organisation with the aim
of ensuring that HGVs/lorries keep off inappropriate
rural roads and lanes. You can report incidents by downloading
the incident
report form and sending the completed form to LORD,
7 Old Hall Cottages, Normandy, Surrey GU3 2DH or by
emailing an online form to lord@lorryproblems.org.uk.
Wonersh Traffic Group
Feedback from our recent Parish Survey highlighted
speeding traffic in the village as the highest priority
concern for residents. We are currently setting up a
traffic group to work with the police and local councils
to investigate ways to reduce speeds and peoples concerns.
Projects that are under consideration are setting up
a Speedwatch scheme on Wonersh Common
Road (this has already been very effective in Shamley
Green), introducing a 20mph speed limit in the Street
and looking as ways of reducing speed and accidents
around the bends in the centre of the village. If you
would like to get involved please telephone David Beevers
on 892271 or e-mail him at david.beevers@zen.co.uk.
Speedwatch
Playground Committee
We have excellent playground facilities on the Common
in Wonersh and at Lords Hill in Shamley Green. Most
of the equipment on these playgrounds has been purchased
as the result of fund raising activities in the 2 villages.
The children of many of the playground committee members
are now too old to use the equipment. We are looking
for new committee members, especially parents of children
who regularly use the playgrounds.
If you would like to get involved please telephone Louise
Healy on 898539 or e-mail her at thehealys@supanet.com.
Wonersh Village Society
In Shamley Green we have a very active and successful
Village Society and residents association. The organisations
fight for local causes, monitor the effects of planning
proposals and undertake campaigns to improve the village
surroundings and amenities. At the recent Annual Assembly
of the Parish Council, many people expressed an interest
in setting up a Village Society in Wonersh. If you would
like to get involved please telephone John Williams
on 898234 or e-mail him on katejohn.williams@btinternet.com.
